It's Back to School time!
Updated: Jun 22
It's here, time to go back to school! Fortunately, most kids no longer have to carry huge piles of textbooks but they're still lugging around laptops and PE gear and water bottles (water is good!). This means that their backpacks are disproportionately heavy and bulky, and if the weight is not distributed properly it can place stress on their growing bodies. Luckily, there's a few simple things we can do to help them bear the load more easily!
First, let's look at those backpack straps. We want them to be nice and tight, and the base of the bag to sit in the small of the back. Make sure the shoulder straps are an even length and encourage the kids to use the belly straps if they have them. Next, we want to make sure the bag is packed correctly - heavy objects at the base of the bag (that seems pretty obvious) but ALSO packed closest to your child's spine. Heavy objects toward the front of the bag will pull them backward, which means their bodies have to work harder just to stay upright! Lastly, it's important to look at just how much weight they're carrying - ideally, their bag will be no more than 10% of their body weight. That gets tricky when they're carrying water and laptops, so try to make sure they aren't collecting random things in there!
If in doubt, feel free to bring your child and their backpack in to the clinic and I'm happy to have a look and tweak the fit. I also work a lot directly with kid's spines and alignment, so if you have any questions about how Chiropractic care can help you or your family, please just give me a call for a chat on 0422484246.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
