What's the situation with your supplements?!

Today we're talking supplements and more importantly what I take and recommend myself. There's a few things involved here so let's leap straight in and go one point at a time!

First: Why do we need supplements? Well, because globally we have been farming the same soil for generations and that poor soil is getting tired (read more here). There simply aren't as many nutrients left in the soil as there used to be, so there's not as many nutrients in the food that we grow and eat, so we need to get extra vitamins and minerals from somewhere outside our food - enter stage left, a great supplement. That brings us to our second point: How do we choose a supplement?

There's a few things to consider when choosing a supplement, mainly concentration and dose. All of your supplements will have the ingredients and amounts on the bottle - put a few bottles side by side and compare the active concentrations of each ingredient to work out which brand has the highest concentration (there can be surprisingly large differences), that way you won't rattle when you walk from all the tablets! It's also important to ask your health care practitioner what your dose should be - the dose on the bottle may not be what you actually need, so confirm that you're actually taking enough for it to work properly. Feel free to ask me when you're in for your next appointment! We stock Metagenics and Bioceuticals in the clinic, as they're brands with excellent research to back them up, and they make great quality and high strength supplements.

The other question I'm often asked is which supplements do I take? The answer, as always, 'it depends'. I consistently take a multivitamin, fish oil, and probiotic, and I use the brands we stock in the clinic (Metagenics and Bioceuticals). If I'm run down, I'll add some extra magnesium to support stress and fatigue. If I'm feeling under the weather, I'll add some Super Mushroom Extract to boost my immune system and help fight bugs. I'll often rotate my probiotics around so I'm getting a good variety of bacteria in my digestive system, so no one strain can overpower the others (even if it is a good strain of tummy bacteria). In Winter I'll also often add some Vitamin D as a good boost for the immune system (and for allergies - hayfever sufferers get on it!) and it can be hard to get enough sunshine when it's rainy.

There's bound to be more questions so I'd love you to ask me at your next chiro appointment and we've been putting some more info on our Facebook page as well. If you're going to take a supplement (and we think you probably should) then let's make it a good quality one, at a dose that will be effective, so if in doubt - just let me know!
